“Groups”: a wave of fear, hope and exasperation is likely to grip us. Whether it is a work committee, a political action group, a military platoon, a church choir or a dance troupe, groups permeate our lives. What is it about groups that make them unforgettably intimate or sources of disappointment and repulsion? This class gives you the tools to apply in understanding your past groups and intervening in your present and future group endeavors. There is an extremely well-written textbook with chapters that supplements the class. There are also three excellent movies that you can watch to see group dynamics in action. They are Alive, about survivors in the Andes mountains; The Commitments, about the formation of an Irish working-class band; and the last movie, Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, covers intergroup dynamics along with collective behavior. Both the readings and the videos are strictly optional. General Public/Members: $88/$82 Nine Sessions
