About the Event

Students will learn the basics of algebra using a simple system of tiles. All symbols and procedures are learned with the tiles; no memorization is required. The course is intended for people who want to learn or review algebra and is especially suitable for people who were not successful in the past. The curriculum is appropriate for people of all abilities and skills. An online textbook and algebra tiles will be provided. The course will be taught in 4 sessions of 2 hours each, once per week. Student Materials: • Textbook • Manipulatives Class Plan: • Week 1: Introduction, variables, expressions • Week 2: Negative Numbers • Week 3: Equations, Functions and Rules • Week 4: Factoring There will be optional exercises and homework. Students can purchase a set of manipulatives or borrow a set from the instructor. General Public/Members: $48/$42   Four Sessions

Your Teacher: Steven Kant is a former math teacher at the secondary and college level, the retired co-owner of a software development company, and the parent of grown children who love mathematics. He is a long-time volunteer in the public schools where he teaches visual algebra from Kindergarten on up and leads math games and geometric building activities.
