The Step into Nature Series takes you outside to explore our beautiful natural surroundings. This time we’re off to Mount Saint Helen’s. Depending on the temperature, we’ll start with a visit to the stunning, Johnston Ridge Observatory to learn about the 1980 eruption and get an up close look at the crater. After a plentiful picnic lunch at Coldwater Lake, we’ll hike the Hummock’s Interpretive Loop Trail keeping an eye out for wildlife. The Hummocks are massive mounds of rock, ash, and mud that now tower 500 feet over a once-grand ancient forest. The 2.5-mile loop trail has rolling terrain but little elevation-gain. We should catch some wildflowers in bloom. Bring your camera and sunhat, it will be a day to remember.
